About

pennykastagir1

I love to paint in bright colors. I have been painting since I was 11 years old. Most of my training was in England and I have taken classes at Harbor College and workshops locally.

Since 1988 I have developed a style influenced by the French and English Naïve schools, which I incorporate into street and market scenes in my travels around the world. Each painting has a border which represents the country I am working on. I also paint portraits, landscapes, and impressionistic still life on large canvasses, which allow me more freedom of expression while still retaining a primitive look. I love to see the colors “pop” from the pictures and like lots of contrast.  I paint mostly in acrylics which give me opacity without the mess of oil clean-up. I prefer gouache to transparent water colors in my small, detailed street scenes. Since I became computer literate I have enjoyed working with digital photography.

pennykastagir2I have published several books of my work. Most notable are “Orlando Visits the French Impressionists” and “Orlando Reads the Classics” —both books about my cats.

My paintings have been accepted into juried shows at Torrance Art Museum, Torrance Artists Guild, South Bay Watercolor Society, Palos Verdes Library and Palos Verdes Art Center, and have sold nationally and internationally. I have had solo shows at several galleries in the South Bay and am currently the artist in residence at Organically At Your Best Face and Body Spa in Torrance.
